HiB client Henry Fagg has an article published in
The Times Educational Supplement
While working for a tuition company in Japan, Henry came up with the idea of thetutorpages.com – a UK-wide tutor directory with a difference. Each tutor has to submit an article on their expertise, thus helping parents and students choose who best to hire.
Since it went live in early 2008, the online business has gone from strength to strength, with Henry recently asked to write a feature article for The Times Educational Supplement on the subject of tutoring.
‘It was one thing coming up with the idea, but turning the idea into a reality required a lot of hard graft – and the support offered by Harrow in Business (HiB) came at just the right time for me’, says Henry.
Henry first approached HIB in the summer of 2007 and quickly found himself part of a group mentoring scheme, along with five other entrepreneurs setting up a very diverse range of businesses. ‘I found the diversity really helpful because it enabled me to think outside the box,’ commented Henry. ‘The issues we all faced were very similar in the end and the emotional support and advice provided by the group mentor and indeed the other members was invaluable’.
When the first group mentor programme came to an end, Henry decided to take things further and join another group for established businesses. Although he found it a bit daunting at first, joining this second group has been another excellent experience for him. ‘I’ve found that there’s so much to learn from others who’ve experienced similar challenges to me in the past. I really feel that I’ve been pulled up to their level.’
As for whether he recommends the working with HIB, Henry is convinced. ‘Being a small business owner can sometimes be isolating. The monthly meetings are an excellent opportunity to take stock, re-invigorate and re establish direction.’
